Living Hope

Hello, today my sister and I are doing our post together on Zechariah 12:10 which says:

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.”

God is saying here that all Israel would mourn for the one they pierced. This a prophecy about one that they would pierce one who is God, and then mourn for Him. This prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus.

Jesus, the son of God and God Himself, was pierced by the people. Why? Jesus was sent by His Father to take on all the sins of the world, and to take the punishment for them. Romans 6:23 says:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jesus took the punishment of our sin: death. He was perfect, yet He suffered our punishment. Because of Jesus we received the gift of God: eternal life! No, we will not live forever on this earth, but if we have put our faith in Jesus then we will have eternal life in Heaven!

Jesus died to save our us from our sins, but does this mean that we should mourn for Jesus like those in Zechariah 12? No! Because our hope, Jesus, is a living hope; Jesus is alive! He rose from the grave on the third day and ascended into Heaven to intercede on our behalf; our hope is alive!

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland
