Hello, today my sister and I are doing our post together on Zechariah 9:16 which says:
“The Lord their God will save his people on that day
as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.”
Here the Lord would save His people from the hardships other nations, however this is a prophecy of something that would come later. This passage, like many other passages, is pointing forward to the Messiah who came to earth to save His people. The Jews thought that this Messiah would save the Israelite nation from the Romans, and that He would rule over them as King. However, the Messiah came to save His people from something different.
First we must understand who the Messiah is: the New Testament tells us that the Messiah is God’s own son, Jesus. And Jesus came down from Heaven to save His people, but His people were not only the Israelites. All those who believe in what Jesus did on the cross for us are His people. Jesus took on all our sin, and He died; He took the punishment of our sin on Himself.
Jesus was the savior that took the wrath of God for us. He didn’t just save the Israelites from the Romans, He saved the world from sin. Jesus gave His life so that we could go to heaven, and be children of God. He is our shepherd, and He saved us, His flock, from God’s wrath!
