Hello, today my sister and I are doing a post together on Zechariah 1:17 which says:
““Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
God was saying, in this passage, that he had been a little angry with Israel, so He let the other nations plunder it. However, God said that those nations had taken the punishment too far. He said that He would extend mercy to Jerusalem and Israel.
When God says that He would extend mercy toward Israel and Jerusalem, He is saying that He would extend mercy to His people. God did extend mercy to His people, to those He loves. However, He did not just extend His mercy to Jerusalem, He extended mercy to the whole world! How? The whole world is full of sinners, and God punishes sin, which means that the everyone had God’s wrath on them. Yet God extended mercy to the whole world because He loves the whole world (John 3:16).
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
He gave us His grace and love through His son, Jesus Christ! God sent Jesus down from heaven to take the sins of the world upon Himself, and to give us His righteousness. Now, because of Jesus, we are the new Jerusalem; God has extended His mercy to us! Because Jesus loves us we are saved from our sins!
Even though Zechariah 1:16 does point forward to God saving the physical Jerusalem; it also points forward to how God saved the world and made a spiritual Jerusalem.
