Joy and I have written a post together summarizing the sermon, I hope you enjoy!
Hi, the pastor preached on Luke 9:51-56 which says,
“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.”
The points that we got out of the sermon were Resolution, rejection, rebuke and rejoice. The pastor had different points, however these make more sense to us.
Resolution: Jesus was determined to make it to the cross to save us from our sin. He would do anything to get to the cross to die for us on it and save us. Jesus “set his face like flint” to go to the cross for us.
“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”
Rejection: The Bible tells us that Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem, and He decided to go through Samaria. However when the Samaritans heard that Jesus was headed to Jerusalem, they rejected him.
“but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:53)
Rebuke: After the people rejected Jesus, the disciples asked if Jesus wanted them to call down fire on the people. But Jesus rebuked them, because that’s not what Jesus is like.
Rejoice: Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem to be crucified on the cross, because of that we are saved from our sins! So, let us rejoice that we are saved!
