Jesus, the Eternal Life

Today God has given me 1 John 1:2-3 which says:

The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”

Who is “the Life” that John talks about in the beginning of verse 2? Look at the end of verse 3, he says “…the Father and with His son, Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ is the Life who appeared; in fact Jesus tells us that He is the life:

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus is the life that appeared, but what does John mean when he says “appeared”, where did Jesus “appear” from? Jesus is God the son, so He “appeared” from heaven, He came down from heaven. So why did he come down from heaven? That question brings us back to the fact that Jesus is the life; Jesus came down from heaven to give us life, eternal life. How did Jesus give us eternal life? By laying down His life as a sacrifice to up-ease God’s wrath.

But that brings another big question, why did Jesus become a sacrifice for us? He became a sacrifice for us because He loves us. That is the Gospel, that is what saves us from our sins! So now we can proclaim to others the eternal life, Jesus, just like John does in verse 2.

To wrap up: Jesus (the Life) came down from His kingdom in heaven in order to give us eternal life, and Jesus gave us that eternal life by laying down His life for us on the cross because He loves us. And now we can proclaim that wonderful news to everyone that we meet!
