Today the pastor preached on holiness through the Spirit, but I am going to talk about holiness through the Gospel. The pastor brought up 1 Peter 1:14-16, but I’m going to include 17-21:
“14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a]
17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.”
In verses 14-16 Paul tells us to be holy, just like the pastor did. However, the pastor stopped at “be holy” and Paul doesn’t, Paul keeps going into verses 17 and on. Paul gives us the means of how we can “be holy”, he tells us how it is possible to be holy. In verses 18-21 Paul provides the way that we can be saved from this inevitable predicament.
Paul tells us that it is through Jesus’ precious blood that we were “redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to us from our ancestors”. Through Jesus’ death on the cross we are saved and redeemed. Jesus gave us His perfection, His righteousness, and now we are holy.
God required us to be holy in order to live, otherwise we would die. But Jesus died for us and gave us His holiness, Paul is telling us that we were redeemed because of Jesus! That is how we “become” holy, that is how we can live. Through Jesus’ death and Resurrection we are saved.
