God’s word for me today is in Zechariah 12:8 which says:
“8 On that day the Lord will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord going before them.”
That is what God does (along with many other things), He strengthens the weak, He heals the sick. He did that when He came down to earth; Jesus (who is God, and God’s son) healed the sick and strengthened the weak. But there was one major way that He healed the spiritually sick; there was one big way that He strengthened the weak.
Through an offering, a sacrifice. Through the biggest sacrifice that ever has or will be made on earth! The sacrifice of God’s own son; the death of God’s one and only son. That is what healed those spiritually sick and spiritually weak. How?
Here’s one side of the story: people are sinners. That is what we do, we were born doing and we were going to continue doing it for as long as we lived. Therefore every human deserved an everlasting, tormenting punishment in hell. And we were going to get that punishment, however, the operative word is “were”. We were going to endure God’s never-ending wrath.
But now we experience God’s never-ending love. So, back to the greatest sacrifice that ever happened. That sacrifice explains why we went from experiencing God’s unending wrath, to having God’s unending love. You see, Jesus took all of that awful sin upon Himself, and then He died with it. He took every last drop of God’s wrath, ever last bit of it, and died for us.
In order to have His wrath up-eased, God required death and blood. Jesus provided that for us; instead of the sinners who were rightfully deserving of God’s wrath it was Jesus, the perfect son of God, who endured all of God’s wrath. Shouldn’t that inspire an amazing uproar of overwhelmed and thankful people?
We live because Jesus died and rose again for us. Now we are made strong “like David”; now we are healed from our sin sickness!
Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland
