Like Your Ancestors

God’s word for me today is in Zechariah 1:4 which says:

Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.”

Yikes! That’s like telling someone to be perfect, to completely get rid of their genetics! How is that possible, how can someone completely stop doing what their ancestors did, what they had been raised in? How can someone just turn from their evil ways and practices? For the Israelites, the Lord wanted them to turn back to Him, of course they weren’t perfect so they had sacrifices to help them. But how does this passage apply to us?

Answer: we really did need to be perfect in order to live. We don’t offer sacrifices, we were going to die with God’s wrath upon us. There was no way we could possibly stop our sinful ways and evil practices. And there’s are reason people say “I’m fat because I’m Italian” you know. So how could we possibly just stop sinning? We can’t, but we do have an atonement! God sent His one and only son to die for us just because He loves us! Jesus came down from heaven to atone for our sins! He cleaned us from our sins so that we could be pure and holy in God’s sight!

So now it doesn’t matter if your Italian, or Irish, or anything as long as you have trusted in Jesus! If you have believed in Jesus then you are saved from your sins! Now we should share the Gospel with everyone, Christian or not, so that they can either trust in Jesus or be encouraged in the Gospel!

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland
