God’s word for me today is in Jonah 1:12-13 which says:
“12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.” 13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.”
Jonah was called by God to go to Ninevah and tell the people there that God was going to destroy them and that they should repent. However Jonah thought he could run and hide from God so he got on a boat headed for Tarshish and fell asleep in the bottom in the middle of a terrible God-sent storm. The crew cried to their gods but because there is no true god except for Jesus, the crews gods could not save them. But they cast lots and it fell on Jonah so he told them to throw him over board. They didn’t at first but they realized it was the only thing they could do so they threw him over after they asked God not to hold them guilty.
Even though Jonah ran away from God he is still a shadow of Jesus. He offered himself up as a sacrifice so that the crew could live. We are like the crew because we were going to die, but Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice and died so that we could live! Even if we try to row as hard as we can by doing good works, we cannot do it without Jesus, so Jesus died for us and now if we trust in Him we live. Our SOS was met, Save us from Our Sins. That is what Jesus did, He saved us from our sins!
Now that we are saved we can tell others about how Jesus saved us! We can tell them that we were stuck in the storm of sin and that even if we paddled long and hard we wouldn’t live. But then Jesus came and died for us and we are now on dry safe ground. We can go out and share the Gospel that Jesus died for us on the cross with other drowning sailors, we should tell them that if they will repent of their sins and trust in Jesus then they will be saved! If you have not trusted in Jesus then why don’t you do it now and live?
Praise the Lord that we are saved from our sins!
