Obeying the Word

Hi, God’s word for me today is in John 8:49-51 which says,

49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(A) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(B)

Here Jesus is talking to the Pharisees who thought that He was demon possessed. Clearly He wasn’t but the Jews disagreed with what He said and therefore said that He was demon possessed. Jesus then told them that He was not possessed by a demon and that He honored His Father while the Pharisees dishonored Jesus. Jesus said that He was not seeking glory for Him but that there is one who seeks it. Then Jesus told them that whoever obeyed His word would never see death.

How is that possible? The Pharisees wondered that too, they were familiar with the Old Testament law that said if anyone sinned they would die but Jesus said that whoever obeyed His word would never see death. But what is Jesus’ word? Well we were sinners that were going to die with God’s wrath and our sins on us, but Jesus came down from heaven and took our sins along with God’s wrath on Him, then He died for us on the cross. This is the word that we have to obey in order to not see death, we should trust in Jesus and live. Yes we will physically die but Christians never see death, they see Christ.

We should trust in Jesus, we should repent of our sins and believe in Jesus. If we trust in Jesus then we will live, we will have eternal life in heaven. If we accept Jesus as our savior and repent of our sins then we will be freed from sins. That does not mean we are free to sin, the Gospel makes us free from sin. We should trust in Jesus and live. If we believe in Jesus then we will be free from sins, we once were slaves to sin but now we are free from it. Jesus made a new law, that law is that if we trust in Him and repent of our sins then we will live. We don’t have to try to work our way into heaven, we should trust in Jesus and repent of our sins.

We should trust in Jesus and we should glorify God. Jesus told the Pharisees that He was not seeking glory but that there was one who was seeking glory, Jesus was talking about the Lord. We should Glorify the Lord and at the same time we will be glorifying Jesus because God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus are all three in one. We should glorify Jesus for dying for our sins on a cross. We should also share the Gospel with others. If we give the Gospel to unbelievers then they can live, they can be set free from their sins. We should glorify Jesus and we should share the Gospel with unbelievers.

Thank You Jesus for coming down from heaven and dying for our sins. Thank You Jesus for taking God’s wrath and our sins on You and then dying for us on a cross. Thank You Jesus for loving us enough to become our atoning sacrifice. Thank You Jesus for loving us enough to die for us. Thank You Jesus for rising again on the third day and then ascending into heaven to mediate on our behalf and to prepare a place for us. Thank You Jesus for all that You have done for us.

Are you trusting in Jesus?

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland.
