Hi, God’s word for me today is in John 6:27-29 which says,

27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

In this passage the people that had been fed by Jesus went searching for Him and when they found Him they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”  Then Jesus told them that they were looking for Him only because they ate the loaves and fishes that He gave them. Then Jesus says that they should not work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man (Jesus) would give them. Jesus says that God the Father has placed His seal of approval on Him (Jesus). Then they asked Jesus what works they needed to do and Jesus told them that they had to believe in the one God had sent which was Jesus. Then Jesus says that He is the bread on life.

Why should we trust in Jesus? Why is He the bread on life? We were sinners, we were going to die in our sins with God’s wrath on us. But Jesus came down from heaven and took our sins along with God’s wrath on Him and He died for us on a criminals cross. Jesus Himself was perfect but when He took our sins on Him He was condemned in our place on the cross. He was the perfect sacrifice that atoned for our sins. That is why we should trust in Jesus, if we just believe in Him then we will be saved.

Jesus came down from heaven and died for our sins because He loved us. We should believe in Him, the Pharisees asked what work they had to do that God required. But Jesus answered that they only had to believe in Jesus. The Pharisees were used to doing work, that was what their whole religion was on but because of Jesus we don’t do anything but repent of our sins and believe in Jesus. If we try to work our way into heaven it won’t work, the works we would try to do are as filthy rags,

“All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” (NIV Isaiah 64:6)

Our works are as filthy rags but if we trust in Jesus then we are saved.

We should trust in Jesus and not try to work our way into heaven, but we can do good works. In fact crowns are stored up in heaven for us because of the good works we do, of course we shouldn’t do good works for the wrong motives like trying to get the crowns in heaven but we should do them because we want to. We have Jesus in us and we should want to help and to be kind to others, not because it will get us into heaven but because it is what we want to do. We should trust in Christ and help others in physical ways like giving food or clothing to people and in spiritual ways, like sharing the Gospel with them. We should help others trust in Jesus and we should trust in Jesus ourselves.

Thank You Jesus for coming down from heaven and dying for us so that we could live. Thank You Jesus for loving us enough to give us the bread of life. Thank You Jesus for making us sons and daughters of God. Thank You Jesus for dying for our sins. Thank You Jesus for rising again on the third day and then ascending into heaven to prepare a place for us and to mediate on our behalf. Thank You Jesus for letting us believe in You and for dying with our sins and God’s wrath on You.

Are you trusting in Jesus?

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland.
