Building Up the Temple

Hi, God’s word for me today is in John 2:19-21 which says,

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.”

In this section we see that Jesus goes up into the temple courts and He finds that people are selling livestock and doves and that they were exchanging money. So Jesus made a whip and drove the people out, He made their money fall on the floor and He told the people that were selling doves to let them go. Then they asked Him what authority He had to do all that, they asked Him to show them a sign and Jesus said “destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days”, but they didn’t believe. However they didn’t know that He was talking about His body.

What did Jesus mean when He said “tear this temple down and I will build it up in three days” how could He “build” up His body in three days? Well Jesus is talking about His death on the cross, yes Jesus who is the son of God (and God Himself) died for us on a cross. He loved us enough to sacrifice Himself for us on a cross, Jesus died for our sins so that we could live,

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (NIV Luke 19:10)

Jesus came down from heaven to save us who were lost. We should accept Him as our savior, He died so that we could live and we should accept Him. But is Jesus still in the grave with all of our sins? No! Jesus was buried but on the third day He Resurrected and our sins are still in the grave. The Jews didn’t know that Jesus was talking about Himself when He said “the temple” but Jesus did rise from the grave on the third day.

We should be temples. We should be temples of God, 1 Corinthians 3:16 says that we are temples of the living God,

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (NIV 1 Corinthians 3:16)

We are temples of the living God and we should act like it, Paul asks “don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple?” so we should live holy and godly lives. Jesus came down from heaven so that we could live and after He ascended into heaven to mediate on our behalf and to prepare a place for us, the Holy Spirit came down and now He lives in us. If we are true temples of God then we should have holy and godly lives.

Thank You Jesus for loving us enough to die for our sins on a cross. Thank You Jesus for coming down from heaven to be a sacrifice for us, thank You Jesus for rising again on the third day. Thank Y0u Jesus for ascending into heaven to prepare a place for and to mediate on our behalf. Thank You Jesus for all that You have done for us. Thank You Jesus for giving us Your word. Thank You Holy Spirit for coming and living in us, thank You Jesus for making us more and more like You. Thank You Jesus for loving us and letting us trust in You, thank You for being our sacrifice and dying for our sins on a cross. Thank You so much for everything that You have done for us.

Are you trusting in Jesus?

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland.
