Hi, God’s word for me today is in Ezekiel 18:31 which says,
“Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?”
The Israelites had been saying that they shouldn’t die because of their sins because their fathers had “eaten sour grapes and set their teeth on edge”. They were basically trying to get out of the punishment of death, but the Lord told them to instead get a new heart and a new spirit. Then He asked them why they would die if they did. Now when He says that He is telling them to be perfect, to turn away from their sins, but they were going to die if they tried to do that because nobody can be perfect. The law required them to be perfect and they couldn’t be, so they were going to die.
Same for us too. The Israelites had to be perfect to live, or they had to start being perfect and doing righteous thing, and if they couldn’t do that they could at least find a perfect sacrifice. But actually none of those would word, they couldn’t be perfect and they couldn’t change to be perfect. Also there wasn’t a perfect sacrifice anywhere on earth. For us it was the same, we either had to be perfect, change to be perfect or find a perfect sacrifice. We couldn’t be perfect or change to be that way and there wasn’t a perfect sacrifice on earth, so we were going to die. But the Lord had mercy on us.
He sent a sacrifice for us. In fact He was that sacrifice! Jesus, who is the son of God (and God Himself) and who was (and is) perfect actually came down from heaven, was born of a virgin and lived a perfect life all to die for our sins! He actually died for us, and after He was buried and on the third day He rose from the grave. Then He ascended into heaven and is preparing a place for us.
But because that is taking it a little fast lets start from the beginning. We were sinners in need of a perfect savior because we were going to die. But because we couldn’t find a perfect sacrifice we really were going to die, and there wasn’t any hope for us. That is why Jesus came down from heaven to atone for our sins like an animal, except He really atoned for our sins. One question though, why would Jesus die for our sins on a cross?
The answer: Jesus loved us. We weren’t perfect enough for Him and it certainly wasn’t because we loved Him first, but it was because He loved us and because He loved us we should love Him. We should love Him enough to worship Him, He did save the entire world from sin, and He gave us a new heart and a new spirit, we just have to accept Him as our savior. Thank you Jesus.
Jesus loved us enough to die for us, and we should not only worship Him but we should share the Gospel with other people.
Are you trusting in Jesus as your savior?
Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland.
