Fortified city’s destroyed

Hi, God’s word for me today is in Jeremiah 51:53 which says,

“Even if Babylon reaches the sky and fortifies her lofty stronghold, I will send destroyers against her,” declares the LORD.”

Okay, in this verse the Lord is saying that even if Babylon has huge fortified cities and big strongholds, the Lord can defeat Babylon. This verse is saying that the Lord can destroy Babylon, but why was He going to destroy Babylon? Because the Israelites were captive to the Babylonians, and the Lord said that He was going to set them free, and clearly in this verse it doesn’t matter what kind of city they have or what kind of protection they (the Babylonians) have.

And the Babylonians (like everything else in the Bible) are a picture of something, Jesus. But how would the Lord taking down Babylon’s fortified city and huge strongholds be a picture of Jesus? Well we were in the stronghold of sin and satan. In fact we weren’t only captives but we were slaves, and we were born in captivity and in slavery. And the stronghold of sin and satan was very stong, we couldn’t get out of it by ourselves and no other human being was able to save us because they were all in the same place we were, so we were doomed.

But this is how it is a picture of Jesus. If you remember the verse in Jeremiah that I brought out says that the Lord was going to send destroyers against it and I said that the Lord destroyed it even though it had fortified city’s and lofty stronghold’s. And the lofty strongholds and fortified city’s of satan had the same story, Jesus knocked them down and rescued us captives. But how? Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and He died in our place. How would that help? We were going to be destroyed or killed on the cross because we were sinners and God can’t accept sin. But that is why Jesus died for us.

So Jesus died for us and saved us from the fortified cities’ of satan and sin,

“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. (NIV Luke 11:21-22)

In this verse the strong man is satan and the stronger man is Jesus, and we were the plunder. Jesus rescued us from satan, thank you Jesus!

To recap, the Babylonians had strong defenses and fortified cities and all that but the Lord was going to destroy them. And that is a picture of us and Jesus because we were captive to satan, and we were going to die because of our sins. But Jesus saved us from the “fortified cities” of satan by dying on the cross in our place. And we should worship Jesus because of all that He has done for us.

Are you trusting in Jesus?

Grace and truth, Charity Cleveland.
