Hi, today the pastor preached on Galatians 3:1-5 which is just Paul asking the Galatians what they were thinking. Because the Galatians were listening to what some people (the Jews) were saying that you really had to obey the law. So the pastor talked on that.
And he said that Paul wasn’t calling them foolish (verse 1) as a pet name like “oh you’re so cute, you little foolish Galatians” he was saying “you foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you” so clearly he was saying something like “what were you thinking”. And the pastor said sometimes you do something wrong and a parent or a teacher confronts you and says something like that like “didn’t you know that what you did was going to make a mess”, so this is what it was like with Paul and the Galatians.
And the reason Paul was upset with the Galatians was because they were getting distracted from the gospel. And the pastor said that of course Paul would think that the Galatians knew the gospel because Peter who was one of Jesus disciples had seen the Galatians, but the Galatians got distracted by the law.
So Paul asks them a group of questions and he says “I just want to know one thing from you” and the pastor said that that’s not something that means a good thing. Because no one comes up to you and says “I just want to know one thing from you, where did you get that shirt” it’s more like “I just want to know one thing from you, why did you do that”.
But anyway, one of Paul’s questions is if they received the spirit by observing the law or by believing what they heard, and what they heard was the gospel. So the gospel is everything. The Galatians though that by observing the law they could be righteous but the gospel is what makes us righteous.
And the pastor said that it wasn’t that he was so righteous that he was the pastor. And he said that Christ made him righteous, and he proved that he wasn’t righteous by his own acts by telling us about a time when he was in high school (or something like that) and he said that,
him and his class had been cheating from another groups papers because the teacher would always give a test which was about 4 or 5 problems long, but when the whole class started to get 1 hundred percent on every test he decided to change the tests but make it like “true or false, true or false, fill in the blank and pick the right answer” and on the fill in the blank they cheated and thought the answer was clay when the question was “what is the root of all life” or something like that and the answer wasn’t clay. So the principle told them that they had been cheating and he (the pastor) raised his hand, and when the principle called on him he said “I dont’ know about anyone else, but I really though that the answer was clay”. But anyway he and his friend cut and burned the letter that was supposed to come to their parents but another student told on them.
So anyway none of us are righteous by our own, and the gospel is the only thing that can make us righteous. How? Because Jesus took our sins on Him.
But that was my “summary” of the sermon, I hope you liked it as much as I liked the sermon.
